Legal Outsourcing Approved by American Bar Association
This
summer, the American Bar Association (ABA) delved into the debate over
legal outsourcing, issuing an advisory stating that the growing trend
of sending legal work offshore is "a salutary one for our globalized
economy." This is good news for an increasing number of legal process
outsourcing (LPO) companies. Meanwhile, attorneys in the U.S. feel
their trepidation grow as the market shifts towards cost-cutting on law
firm bills. "These corporations are under material cost pressures that
are driving the change," said Daniel Reed, CEO of UnitedLex Corp., an
Atlanta-based LPO firm," so it's forcing what's already occurred on
every other level--be it HR, accounting, supply chain--to the legal
market."

Law Department Staffing and Spending are Flattening -- or Dropping
Two
surveys -- the Altman Weil 2008 Chief Legal Officer (CLO) survey and
the Hildebrandt 2008 Law Department Survey -- report either a drop off
or a decline in legal spending. While tightening belts was firmly on
everyone's mind, 49 percent of the CLOs responding to the Altman Weil
survey said they plan to extend their in-house capabilities by hiring
additional lawyers in the next year, jumping from 40 percent last year.
Their motivation for recruiting: 26 percent of law departments plan to
decrease their use of outside counsel, a major bump from the 16 percent
who planned a decrease in last year's survey.
